Each piece in our collection is crafted from extra-fine merino wool, a high-performance, sustainable natural fiber prized for its breathability, stretch, and cooling properties — making it the ideal fabric for dancers in motion. Available in vibrant red, sunflower yellow, and black ribbed sets, the designs accentuate the body’s form and celebrate the bold Latin palette famously associated with the legendary femme fatale.
From the traje de flamenca — the traditional ruffled flamenco dress that flares dramatically with every turn — to the luxurious toreador jacket worn by Escamillo, meticulously hand-sewn and adorned with sequins and rhinestones, every garment is a work of art. The color red symbolizes Carmen’s unapologetic power and sensuality. Her dress is specifically engineered for her final twirl: as she spins, the hem rises into a tulip shape, symbolizing her tragic yet defiant demise. The toreador’s pink, red, and white costume — complete with black pompons and tassels — evokes the grand spectacle of the bullring.
Our designs honor the evolution of ballet costumes across decades and continents, from the opulent 1903 Alhambra London productions in deep orange, pale green, and dark purple that dazzled Victorian audiences with their “audacious color harmonies,” to the shimmering contemporary creations of Milanese designer Luisa Spinatelli, whose sequin-studded gowns for shows at Steinmetz Hall in Orlando and the Dr. Phillips Center dazzle audiences worldwide. The Carmen Costume Collection is also part of the legacy of Gabriela Hearst and the San Francisco Ballet’s Dos Mujeres — a groundbreaking collaboration of Latin female artistic forces led by Tamara Rojo.
